Fungal Infection:

Disease Name: Fungi
Type: Water Mold
Description: A cottony growth that grows outward, plus penetrates internal tissue.
Causes: Mold grows on remnants of left over food and feces, and starts to break them down. Only after there has been skin damage or a parasitic infestation can the spores move into such wounds and then germinate in the skin to form the cottony mycelia. The fungus will often break off, leaving an open wound as seen in the first photo. Fungus will grow back. The fish above contracted a fungal infection due to severe ammonia burn during shipping.
Recommended Treatment: Daily water changes with 3% aquarium salt, can apply a fungus-inhibiting ointment such as Nystatin to open wounds. Continue treatment until wounds are healed.
