Project Piaba is actively leading and participating in the development of Amazon Ornamental fish industry through several programs such as:

  • Commercial breeding of dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma sp.) 

  • Genetic finger-printing (RAPD identification) of wild discus.

  • Study the life history and fishery biology of freshwater sting-rays and aruana (Osteoglossum spp.) in order to advise exporters and regulatory agencies on sustainable harvest of them for ornamental purposes.

  • Organize fish care training courses in Barcelos for local fishermen to improve the quality and reduce mortality rate of wild caught fishes.

  • Collect statistics of fish shipment from Barcelos and the origin of the captures.
