The prototype "Pterophyllum altum" originates from the Orinoco and and very expensively with the dealer is only extremely rarely offered. This beautiful high Segelflosser is however pure game catches. They differ from the Pterophyllum skalaren by steeply rising heading back line and saddle-shaped recessing over the muzzle. This game form is more difficult to keep, is more susceptibly than " the normal " scalar and custom also more workstation. Origin types

  There are these beautiful animals in the most different breed versions. With its color and form variety the scalar has, itself to one most popular aquarium fish " gemausert ". There are e.g. veil scalars, gold scalars, marble scalars, Halbschwarzskalare (these look by the way putzig: their entire back part is black and it works as, as if it would wear panties: -) in each case these bred forms of the scalars are usually designated after their appearance.

  The middle Amazon, over Peru up to east Ecuador is the original at home the Pterophyllum of scalars, but with the dealer offered scalars are almost all Nachzuechtungen. Unfortunately degenerations are frequent to observe with the animals. Many scalars indicate dwarf stature, to large eyes, incorrect drawing and/or disturbed breeding maintenance behavior. Many pairs of scalars put eggs, but these are fertilized not correctly, befaechelt or guarded, because the pair did not learn to harmonieren.

Social behavior

  Scalar ones can be kept good as young animals in the troop and up to 6 animals are well possible it to maintain these in a large basin. If they become however sex ripe, it can come to bad frontal arguments. I have 7 scalars, whereby 3 is males under it. These became from time to time so aggressive that I had to separate them. Now they are finite " in fixed hands " and have hardly still another reason for quarrels. Since scalars monogame Cichliden are very partner faithful - and, they become thus only ruppig, if they defend into the Laichzeit their district.

Sex features

  With scalars one detects only the sex, if this even in Laichstimmung are. The male animals are then the female at that, at the pointed and to differentiate roundish Genital papille. Additionally the female has a stout antinode bulge, if it carries eggs in itself. With my gold scalars the male is more colourful, it lights up red-yellowish, and the female is rather pale yellow.
